'Abbringen' (to dissuade) is a separable verb. The prefix 'ab-' comes at the end in main clauses. In the infinitive with 'zu', 'zu' comes between 'ab' and 'bringen'.

The structure is always fixed: you bring 'jemanden' (someone, accusative) 'von etwas' (away from something, dative) ab. The object of persuasion always appears in the dative after the preposition 'von'.

She talked him out of his plan.
When the action you want to dissuade someone from is described with a verb, you use the structure 'jemanden davon abbringen, etwas zu tun' (to dissuade someone from doing something).
Ich konnte sie davon abbringen, ihren Job zu kündigen.
I was able to dissuade her from quitting her job.
The expression 'jemanden vom Weg abbringen' (to lead someone off the path) can be used literally, meaning to leave a path, or figuratively, in a moral or professional sense. It is often expanded to 'vom rechten Weg abbringen' (to lead someone astray).

'abhalten' and 'abbringen' can both mean that someone does not do something they had planned. The difference is in the focus. 'abhalten' can mean that you stop or warn someone so that the action does not happen. This can also happen because of external circumstances. 'abbringen' is used more when someone already has a plan, intention, or opinion and you convince them to move away from it. Learners may confuse the words because both are often used with 'von etwas' (from something). As a guide: 'jemanden von etwas abhalten' is more about preventing the action; 'jemanden von etwas abbringen' is more about changing the plan or decision.
Emma will die Schule wechseln, aber ihre Eltern bringen sie von dem Plan ab.
