'Abgehoben' (out of touch / aloof) is the past participle of the separable verb 'abheben' (to lift off). The basic idea is that something leaves the ground or a normal, practical level; the figurative meanings developed from this idea as well.
Seine abgehobenen Ideen überzeugten im Team niemanden.
His out-of-touch ideas convinced no one on the team.
In the meaning 'weltfremd' (out of touch), 'abgehoben' (out of touch) frequently occurs with words such as 'Vorstellungen' (ideas), 'Ideen' (ideas), 'Pläne' (plans), or 'Politik' (politics). It means that something has little to do with the practical problems of everyday life.
Viele Bürger fanden den abgehobenen Plan für den Stadtumbau unrealistisch.
Many citizens found the out-of-touch plan for redeveloping the city unrealistic.
For the meaning 'überheblich und distanziert' (arrogant and distant), 'abgehoben' (aloof) is often used with 'wirken' (to seem), 'sein' (to be), or 'bleiben' (to remain). The adjective frequently refers to a person or the way they come across.
Obwohl sie freundlich lächelte, wirkte sie auf viele Gäste abgehoben.
Although she smiled politely, she seemed aloof to many of the guests.
