Usage tips
Word structure
The word comes from the verb 'abneigen'. It is made up of 'ab-' (away from) and 'neigen' (to lean or move toward something). So 'abgeneigt' (averse) literally describes an attitude in which you move away from something or turn away from it.
EXAMPLE
Ich bin solchen Experimenten eher abgeneigt.
I am rather averse to experiments like that.
Dative construction
The adjective 'abgeneigt' (averse) is always used with the dative. The person or thing toward which you feel aversion is in the dative.
EXAMPLE
Er ist neuen Technologien nicht abgeneigt.
He is not averse to new technologies.
Polite agreement
The negated form 'nicht abgeneigt sein' (not to be averse) is a polite and restrained way to express interest or agreement. It means something like 'I could imagine doing that' or 'I actually have nothing against it.'
EXAMPLE
Einem Kaffee wäre ich jetzt nicht abgeneigt.
I wouldn't be averse to a coffee right now.

abgeneigt vs bereit
ready
'bereit' and 'abgeneigt' often show an opposite attitude toward an action or idea. Someone who is 'bereit' is able and willing to do something, or allows something to happen. Someone who is 'abgeneigt' is more likely not to feel like doing it or internally rejects it. Learners may confuse the words because both express an attitude toward something. The key point is: 'bereit' is positive or open, while 'abgeneigt' is negative or rejecting. Phrases such as 'bereit sein zu etwas' (to be willing to do something) and 'nicht abgeneigt sein' are especially typical; the latter cautiously means that someone might actually want to do something after all.
abgeneigt
Ich bin einem Gespräch nicht abgeneigt, aber heute habe ich wenig Zeit.
I'm not opposed to a conversation, but I don't have much time today.
bereit
Mein Nachbar ist bereit, heute mit mir zum Arzt zu fahren.
My neighbor is willing to drive to the doctor with me today.
