ablenken vs stören

to disturb / bother

'stören' and 'ablenken' can both happen when someone wants to concentrate. 'stören' means that someone or something interrupts or hinders peace and quiet or work. 'ablenken' means more specifically that attention is directed away from one thing and toward something else. So something can distract you without strongly disturbing you, for example an interesting conversation next door. Conversely, something can disturb you without really directing your attention to another topic, for example a broken printer. When talking about concentration, both words are possible, but 'ablenken' emphasizes attention.
