'Abmelden' (to deregister / to log out) is a separable verb. The prefix 'ab-' comes at the end in a main clause. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.
Er meldet sich morgen vom Newsletter ab.
He is unsubscribing from the newsletter tomorrow.
The verb is almost always used reflexively with 'sich'. The person performing the action is also the object of the action.
Du musst dich noch für den Kurs abmelden.
You still have to withdraw from the course.
Different prepositions are used depending on the context. You deregister 'beim' Amt (at the office), 'von' einem Kurs (from a course), or 'aus' einem System (out of a system).
Sie hat sich gestern beim Bürgeramt abgemeldet.
She deregistered at the citizens' office yesterday.
In connection with computers, programs, or websites, 'sich abmelden' (to log out) always means to end a session. Synonyms from the IT world are 'ausloggen' (to log out) or 'logout'.
Aus Sicherheitsgründen sollte man sich immer vom Online-Banking abmelden.
For security reasons, you should always log out of online banking.
to register / log in
For a course, both words change the participation status in opposite directions. Sich anmelden means beginning or confirming participation; sich abmelden means canceling planned participation. Those who want to take part anmelden, while those who do not want to take part abmelden.
Weil ich am Sprachkurs nicht teilnehmen kann, melde ich mich heute ab.
Because I cannot take part in the language course, I am withdrawing today.
Weil ich am Sprachkurs teilnehmen möchte, melde ich mich heute an.
Because I want to take part in the language course, I am signing up today.
