'Abmelden' (to deregister / to log out) is a separable verb. The prefix 'ab-' comes at the end in a main clause. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.

The verb is almost always used reflexively with 'sich'. The person performing the action is also the object of the action.

Different prepositions are used depending on the context. You deregister 'beim' Amt (at the office), 'von' einem Kurs (from a course), or 'aus' einem System (out of a system).

In connection with computers, programs, or websites, 'sich abmelden' (to log out) always means to end a session. Synonyms from the IT world are 'ausloggen' (to log out) or 'logout'.

'löschen' and 'abmelden' can both have to do with accounts, systems, or lists. 'löschen' means that data, an account, or an entry is removed. Afterward, the thing is often completely gone. 'abmelden', on the other hand, means that you end a session, have yourself officially removed from a list, or cancel your participation. The data does not necessarily disappear. The words are easy to confuse because you can do both in apps and on websites. Memory tip: logging out or ending participation is usually 'abmelden'; really removing something is 'löschen'.
