A negative answer or notification stating that something is not taking place, a request has been declined, or an application was unsuccessful.

Unfortunately, I received a rejection for my application.
The word 'Absage' is a nominalization of the verb 'absagen' (to cancel / to decline). The prefix 'ab-' here expresses separation or negation, combined with 'sagen' (to say). So an 'Absage' is literally a kind of 'saying away' or 'saying no'.
Der Veranstalter musste dem Sänger leider absagen.
Unfortunately, the organizer had to turn the singer down.
'Absage' is often used with certain verbs. You can 'bekommen' (get) or 'erhalten' (receive) a rejection. A company or person can 'erteilen' (issue/give) a rejection.
Er hat auf seine zehn Bewerbungen acht Absagen bekommen.
He got eight rejections for his ten applications.
If you want to state the reason or target of the rejection, you use the preposition 'auf' followed by the accusative.
Sie erhielt eine Absage auf ihre Anfrage für ein Stipendium.
She received a rejection of her inquiry about a scholarship.

'die Annahme' and 'die Absage' can both be a response to an offer, an invitation, or a proposal. But they express the opposite. 'die Annahme' means that something is accepted or formally adopted. 'die Absage' means that something is rejected or is not taking place. They can be confused because both often occur in similar situations, for example with applications, appointments, or offers. A practical tip: with 'Annahme' comes a yes; with 'Absage' comes a no.

After the job interview, Maria unfortunately received a rejection.
Die Annahme des Angebots muss bis Freitag schriftlich bestätigt werden.
