Both words refer to an extensive piece of work completed at the end of a course of training or a degree program. However, Diplomarbeit specifically belongs to a diploma degree program, while Abschlussarbeit also fits other degree programs, training programs, or courses. Use Diplomarbeit only for a diploma and otherwise usually use Abschlussarbeit.
