The connection to the United States is essential to the meaning. Words such as 'USA' (United States), 'US-amerikanisch' (American), 'Bürgerrechte' (civil rights), or 'Sklaverei' (slavery) often indicate that 'Afroamerikaner' is meant.

Common collocations are 'die Geschichte der Afroamerikaner' (the history of African Americans), 'die Bürgerrechte der Afroamerikaner' (the civil rights of African Americans), and 'Afroamerikaner in den USA' (African Americans in the United States). The word therefore often appears in historical, political, and social texts.
