Usage tips

Separable verb

'Alleinlassen' (to leave alone) is a separable verb. In a main clause, 'allein' is separated from the verb; in a subordinate clause, the verb form stays together. With 'zu', 'zu' goes between 'allein' and 'lassen'.

EXAMPLE

Sie lässt ihren kleinen Bruder nur kurz allein.

She leaves her little brother alone only briefly.

Er bleibt zu Hause, weil er seine Tochter nicht alleinlassen möchte.

He is staying home because he does not want to leave his daughter alone.

Sie versucht, das Kind nicht allein zu lassen.

She tries not to leave the child alone.

Accusative object

The person who is left alone is usually in the accusative case: 'jemanden alleinlassen' (to leave someone alone). This also applies when 'alleinlassen' (to leave someone on their own) is used figuratively to describe a difficult situation or a problem.

Die Ärztin ließ den verletzten Mann nicht allein.

The doctor did not leave the injured man alone.

Typical collocations

In the sense of being without company, 'alleinlassen' (to leave alone) is often used with children, older people, or people who are left without company for only a short time.
