Artgenosse vs Mitmensch

fellow human being

'Mitmensch' and 'Artgenosse' both have to do with another being from the same group, but they are used very differently. 'Mitmensch' is said about other people and emphasizes the social or moral relationship to them. 'Artgenosse' is almost always used for animals: it means that one animal belongs to the same biological species as another. The words can be confused because of their similar form. For people, 'Mitmensch' is natural. For animals, 'Artgenosse' is more precise.
