'der Mord' and 'das Attentat' can both have to do with a planned killing. 'Mord' is the more general term for the intentional and unlawful killing of a person. 'Attentat' means an assassination attempt, often against a well-known or politically important person and usually for political, religious, or similar reasons. Learners may confuse the words because an 'Attentat' often also involves a 'Mord'. But not every 'Mord' is an 'Attentat'. 'Attentat' fits especially when public figures and a planned attack are involved.
