'Aufgeweckt' (bright / alert) is the past participle of the verb 'aufwecken' (to wake someone up). The literal meaning 'woken up' is used here metaphorically for someone who is mentally awake, alert, and quick-thinking.

This adjective is most often used to describe children, praising their intelligence and quick understanding. It is used less often for adults.

In addition to directly describing a person ('ein aufgewecktes Kind' — a bright child), the adjective is often combined with nouns such as 'Blick' (look), 'Wesen' (nature), or 'Geist' (mind). You can also say 'einen aufgeweckten Eindruck machen' (to make a bright/alert impression).

'aufmerksam' and 'aufgeweckt' can both show that someone is mentally alert. However, 'aufmerksam' mainly describes behavior in a particular situation: someone is listening, paying attention, or observing carefully. 'aufgeweckt' describes more of a personal quality, especially in children: someone is lively, bright, and quick to understand. The words can be confused because both sound positive. As a practical rule: for a specific task or conversation, 'aufmerksam' often fits. For a bright, alert personality, 'aufgeweckt' is usually more suitable.
