„Aufschauen“ (to look up) consists of „auf“ (up) and „schauen“ (to look) and is separable. In a main clause, „auf“ is separated and placed at the end; in a subordinate clause, the verb remains together. With the infinitive „zu“, „zu“ comes between the two parts.

Sie bemerkte die Besucherin erst, als sie aufschaute.

With „von“ (from) plus the dative, you can indicate what someone looks up from. Typical combinations are „vom Buch aufschauen“ (to look up from a book) and „von der Arbeit aufschauen“ (to look up from work).
Die Kollegin schaute von ihrer Arbeit auf, als ich das Büro betrat.
The colleague looked up from her work when I entered the office.
When expressing admiration, the pattern is „zu jemandem aufschauen“ (to look up to someone): „zu“ requires the dative. The admired person therefore does not appear as a direct object of the verb.

The young players look up to their coach because he takes them seriously and supports them.
