'Aufspannen' (to stretch / put up) consists of 'auf' and 'spannen' (to stretch) and is separable. In a main clause with a simple verb form, 'auf' appears at the end; in a subordinate clause, the verb remains together. With the infinitive preceded by 'zu', 'zu' comes between 'auf' and 'spannen'.
In front of the café, the waiter puts up a sun umbrella.
We are waiting until the waiter puts up the sun umbrella.
Sie versucht, den Sonnenschirm aufzuspannen.
She is trying to put up the sun umbrella.
A common pattern is 'etwas auf einen Rahmen aufspannen' (to stretch something onto a frame). The material is the object in the accusative; after 'auf', the accusative is also used here because the attachment to the frame is being described.
For the exhibition, we are stretching the printed fabric onto a large frame.
In mathematical texts, the vectors are often the subject and the space is the accusative object. In the passive, the space becomes the subject; the vectors can be named with 'von' (by) and the dative.
These three vectors span the entire space.
The entire space is spanned by these three vectors.
