ausscheiden vs verlieren

to lose

'verlieren' and 'ausscheiden' can both be used in sports, games, or competitions. 'verlieren' means that you do not win a game, fight, or competition. 'ausscheiden' means that afterward you are no longer allowed or able to continue taking part, for example in a tournament. You can lose a game and still remain in the tournament. If the defeat means the end of participation, 'ausscheiden' is more precise. Learners can easily confuse the words because dropping out often happens as a result of losing.
