'durchführen' and 'austragen' can both refer to something planned that actually takes place. 'durchführen' is very general and fits many actions, for example an investigation, a course, or an event. 'austragen' is used mainly for competitions, games, conflicts, or disputes that are brought to a result. Learners may confuse the words especially in sports: a club can 'ein Turnier durchführen' (run a tournament), but 'ein Finale wird ausgetragen' (a final is held / played).
