'Azubi' is the normal short form of 'Auszubildender' or 'Auszubildende' and works well in everyday language and in a company setting. 'Stift' is colloquial for this and today often sounds old-fashioned or sometimes derogatory. Confusion can arise because 'Stift' much more commonly means a writing instrument. If you want to speak neutrally about a person in training, 'Azubi' is almost always the better choice.
