The prefix 'be-' is inseparable, which means it stays firmly attached to the verb in all sentence forms. It also makes the verb transitive: it always needs a direct object.

The country or region that one visits always comes directly after the verb in the accusative. You do not use a preposition like 'in' or 'durch' (through).

The object of 'bereisen' (to travel through) is usually a larger geographical unit. Typical objects are 'ein Land' (a country), 'eine Region' (a region), 'einen Kontinent' (a continent), or 'die Welt' (the world).

'reisen' and 'bereisen' both have to do with traveling. 'reisen' is the normal, general verb: you travel to Berlin, to Spain, or by train. 'bereisen' usually needs a direct object, for example a country or a region. It means that you travel through this area and visit several places. Learners may confuse the words because both fit with vacations and exploring. The important difference is: you use 'reisen' with 'nach' or 'in' for a country, but you 'bereisen' a country or region.
