Usage tips
Word structure
The word comes from Greek: 'chronos' means 'time' and 'logos' means 'study' or 'order.' A chronology is therefore the study of temporal order.
EXAMPLE
Ein Chronometer ist eine sehr genaue Uhr, was auch vom Wort „chronos“ kommt.
A chronometer is a very precise clock, which also comes from the word 'chronos.'
Word family
The related adjective is 'chronologisch' (chronological). If something is in the correct time order, it is arranged chronologically.
EXAMPLE
Bitte sortieren Sie die Dokumente chronologisch nach Datum.
Please sort the documents chronologically by date.
Typical collocations
'Chronologie' (chronology) is often used with the genitive or with 'von' (of) to say what the sequence is of, e.g. 'die Chronologie der Ereignisse' (the chronology of events). Typical verbs are 'erstellen' (to create), 'rekonstruieren' (to reconstruct), or 'einhalten' (to follow/adhere to).
EXAMPLE
Die Polizei versucht, die genaue Chronologie des Tathergangs zu rekonstruieren.

Chronologie vs Ablauf
sequence / drain
'der Ablauf' and 'die Chronologie' both describe the order in which something happens. 'der Ablauf' is especially good for events, appointments, processes, or practical steps: you are asking how something is organized and what comes next. 'die Chronologie' refers more specifically to the chronological order of events, often when you later describe or investigate what happened when. The words can be confused because both refer to a sequence. For a plan or an event, you usually say 'Ablauf'. For the exact chronological order of events, 'Chronologie' fits better.
Chronologie
Für den Bericht ist die Chronologie der Ereignisse besonders wichtig.
The chronology of events is especially important for the report.
Ablauf
In der Pause erklärt die Lehrerin den Ablauf der Prüfung.
During the break, the teacher explains the structure of the exam.
