Typical collocations
A spoken or written thank-you is often described as 'herzlich' (heartfelt), 'groß' (big), or 'aufrichtig' (sincere). The expression 'jemandem ein Dankeschön aussprechen' (to express one's thanks to someone) is typical of public or formal occasions.

As a thank-you
Use 'als Dankeschön' (as a thank-you) to explain the purpose of a gift or kind gesture. 'Klein' (small) is often used with it: this puts the personal thanks in the foreground rather than the value of the gift.

Als kleines Dankeschön für die Einladung brachte ich selbst gebackene Kekse mit.
