'Der Delegierte' (delegate) is a nominalized form of 'delegiert' (delegated) and refers to a person. As with many nominalized adjectives, its ending depends on the grammatical context.
Ein Delegierter fehlte, aber die übrigen Delegierten waren pünktlich.
One delegate was absent, but the other delegates were on time.
Common combinations include 'Delegierte wählen' (to elect delegates), 'Delegierte entsenden' (to send delegates), 'Delegierte begrüßen' (to welcome delegates), and 'als Delegierter teilnehmen' (to participate as a delegate). The word is especially common in connection with assemblies, political parties, trade unions, and conferences.
Die Mitglieder wählten zwei Delegierte für den Parteitag.
The members elected two delegates for the party conference.
The phrase 'als Delegierter' (as a delegate) is often used to indicate this role; after 'zu', the form is 'zum Delegierten' (as a delegate), for example when someone is elected or appointed. Both constructions describe the same role in different sentence patterns.
Sie nahm als Delegierte an der internationalen Konferenz teil.
She took part in the international conference as a delegate.
Der Verband wählte ihn zum Delegierten für die nächste Sitzung.
The association elected him as a delegate for the next meeting.
'Der Delegierte' (delegate) is primarily used in the formal language of organizations, political bodies, associations, and conferences. In everyday life, the word therefore usually appears in an institutional or official context.
