A swimming style in which both arms are moved forward over the head at the same time and the legs make a wave-like movement. The style is often also referred to as 'Schmetterling' (butterfly).

You can easily recognize the meaning of 'Delphin' (dolphin / butterfly stroke) from the context. If it is about the sea, animals, or nature, it refers to the mammal. In conversations about sports, swimming pools, or competitions, it refers to the swimming stroke.

Schmetterling and Delphin can both refer to the same swimming stroke. Schmetterling tends to refer to the complete stroke, including the body position and simultaneous arm movement, while Delphin can also emphasize the legs’ wave-like movement. For the complete competitive stroke, Schmetterling is usually the more appropriate term.
