demütig vs stolz

proud

'stolz' and 'demütig' both describe an attitude toward oneself. 'stolz' means that someone shows a strong sense of self-worth and is aware of their achievement or importance. This can be positive, but it can also seem arrogant. 'demütig' fits better when someone remains modest and does not make their own importance too great. So the contrast is: 'stolz' shows self-confidence, while 'demütig' shows restraint.
