'historisch' and 'denkmalgeschützt' can both have to do with old buildings or history. 'historisch' generally describes something that belongs to history, comes from the past, or is especially important for history. 'denkmalgeschützt' is more specific and legal: a building or object is under special protection and may not simply be changed or demolished. The words can be confused because many listed or protected buildings are also historical. But not every historical building is automatically 'denkmalgeschützt'.
