Der Gefallen
When it means a favor, „Gefallen“ is masculine: „der Gefallen“ (the favor), plural „die Gefallen“ (the favors). In the expression „Gefallen an etwas finden“ (to take pleasure in something), however, it is the neuter noun „das Gefallen“ (enjoyment of something).
EXAMPLE
Würdest du mir den Gefallen tun und die Tür schließen?
Would you do me the favor of closing the door?
Ich möchte dich um einen kleinen Gefallen bitten.
I would like to ask you for a small favor.
Dative construction
In the common expression „jemandem einen Gefallen tun“ (to do someone a favor), the person is in the dative. The favor itself is in the accusative: someone does someone a favor.
EXAMPLE
Mein Nachbar hat mir einen großen Gefallen getan.
My neighbor did me a great favor.
