The word is made up of 'Deutsch' (German, the school subject) and 'Lehrer' (teacher). This pattern also works for other subjects, e.g. 'Mathelehrer' (math teacher), 'Englischlehrer' (English teacher), or 'Sportlehrer' (PE teacher).

The word 'Lehrer' (teacher) belongs to the word family of 'lehren' (to teach). A teacher is therefore a person who teaches other people something.

To express that someone does this job, you often use the construction 'arbeiten als' (to work as) or simply the verb 'sein' (to be).

'der Lehrer' and 'der Deutschlehrer' both refer to people who teach. 'der Lehrer' is more general: he can teach any subject, for example math, sports, or German. 'der Deutschlehrer' is more specific and means a teacher for the subject German or for German courses. The words can be confused when you only want to say that someone teaches. If the subject is important, you say 'Deutschlehrer'. If the subject is not important or is unknown, 'Lehrer' is enough.
