Dorf vs Stadt

city

'die Stadt' and 'das Dorf' both refer to places where people live, but they are clearly contrasted. A city is larger, more densely built up, and usually has more shops, traffic, and public facilities. A village is smaller and is often in a rural area. Learners may confuse the words when they only want to speak generally about a place to live. In that case, size and surroundings help: when there are many people, streets, and amenities, you are more likely to say 'Stadt'; for a small rural place, 'Dorf' is more likely.
