Usage tips
Separable verb
'Drankommen' consists of 'dran' and 'kommen' and is separable. In a main clause, 'dran' appears at the end; in a subordinate clause, 'drankommen' stays together. With the infinitive preceded by 'zu', 'zu' goes between the two parts.

At the doctor's, I hope I get my turn soon.
Ich warte hier, bis ich drankomme.
I'm waiting here until it's my turn.

Colloquial language
'Drankommen' is colloquial and especially common in everyday conversations. It is also frequently used when talking about classes or exams.

Expressing order
With 'als Erster' (first), 'als Nächster' (next), or 'als Letzter' (last), you can indicate someone's position in a sequence with 'drankommen'. For waiting times, combinations with 'gleich' (right away), 'bald' (soon), and 'endlich' (finally) are typical.

'An' with the accusative
When you explicitly name the object, use 'an' with the accusative: 'an etwas drankommen' (to reach something). 'Dran' remains part of the verb, even when the phrase with 'an' comes before it.
