Usage tips
Separable verb
'Durchlesen' (to read through) is a separable verb. The prefix 'durch' comes at the end of the main clause. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.
EXAMPLE
Lies dir bitte diese E-Mail genau durch.
Please read this email through carefully.
Reflexive use
'Durchlesen' (to read through) is very often used reflexively with a dative pronoun: 'sich (Dativ) etwas durchlesen' (to read something through for oneself). This emphasizes that you are reading something for yourself, often with special attention.
EXAMPLE
Ich muss mir deinen Vorschlag noch einmal in Ruhe durchlesen.
I need to read through your proposal again carefully.
Typical objects
You typically read through texts that need to be checked or understood. Common objects are: 'einen Vertrag' (a contract), 'ein Dokument' (a document), 'einen Bericht' (a report), 'die Anleitung' (the instructions), or 'eine Nachricht' (a message).

durchlesen vs lesen
to read
'lesen' and 'durchlesen' both refer to a text. 'lesen' is the general word: you can read a book, a message, or an article. 'durchlesen' emphasizes that you look at a text from beginning to end, often in order to check it or get an overview. The words can be confused when talking about documents or emails. If only the activity is meant, 'lesen' is enough. If completeness or checking is important, 'durchlesen' is more precise.
durchlesen
Vor der Unterschrift liest mein Nachbar den Vertrag in Ruhe durch.
Before signing, my neighbor reads through the contract carefully.
