'Die Durchsage' (announcement) is the noun form of the separable verb 'durchsagen' (to announce over a loudspeaker). It is made up of 'durch' (through) and 'sagen' (to say) and literally means to 'say' information 'through' a medium (such as a loudspeaker) to many people.

In everyday language, the phrase 'eine Durchsage machen' (to make an announcement) is usually used when someone is speaking. When listening, you use 'eine Durchsage hören' (to hear an announcement).
