egal vs gleich

immediate / same

'gleich' and 'egal' can both mean that something is not important. For example, you can say 'Das ist mir gleich' or 'Das ist mir egal' (It doesn't matter to me). 'egal' is very common in everyday language and sounds direct. 'gleich' in this meaning sounds a little calmer or less colloquial, but it is only used in fixed forms like 'mir gleich'. Learners may confuse the words because in this sense they are almost the same. The important point is: 'gleich' also has other meanings, for example 'right away' or 'same'. 'egal' is used more when you have no preference or consider something unimportant.
