Usage tips
Separable verb
'Eintauschen' (to exchange) is a separable verb. The prefix 'ein-' comes at the end in a main clause, the verb stays together in a subordinate clause, and in the infinitive with 'zu', 'zu' goes in the middle.
EXAMPLE
Ich tausche meine alten Bücher gegen neue ein.
I exchange my old books for new ones.
Sentence structure with 'gegen'
The structure for an exchange is almost always: 'etwas (Akkusativ) gegen etwas anderes (Akkusativ) eintauschen' (to exchange something for something else). The preposition 'gegen' (for/against) is essential here.
EXAMPLE
Sie können Ihre Treuepunkte gegen einen Einkaufsgutschein eintauschen.
You can exchange your loyalty points for a shopping voucher.
Typical collocations
Old or used things are often exchanged, for example 'ein altes Handy eintauschen' (to trade in an old phone). But you can also exchange abstract things like 'Punkte' (points) or 'Meilen' (miles) for rewards.
EXAMPLE
Beim Kauf eines neuen Laptops konnte ich mein altes Gerät eintauschen und bekam einen Rabatt.
When buying a new laptop, I was able to trade in my old device and got a discount.

eintauschen vs verkaufen
to sell
'verkaufen' and 'eintauschen' both have to do with giving something away. The important difference is what you get in return. With 'verkaufen', you get money. With 'eintauschen', you get another item or another kind of value, but not simply the purchase price. Learners may confuse the words because in both cases the owner changes. As a practical rule: if money is being paid, 'verkaufen' usually fits. If it is thing for thing, 'eintauschen' fits.
