'Ekstase' (ecstasy) is very often used with the fixed expression 'in Ekstase geraten' (to go into ecstasy) to describe the beginning of this state. The state itself is expressed with 'in Ekstase sein' (to be in ecstasy).

The word is often used in contexts such as sports, music, or art. Typical verbs are 'jemanden in Ekstase versetzen' (to send someone into ecstasy) or 'in Ekstase ausbrechen' (to break out in ecstasy).

'Ekstase' (ecstasy) is a very strong word and describes an extreme feeling of happiness or excitement. It is used for intense, often public moments of joy, not for everyday happiness.

'die Begeisterung' and 'die Ekstase' can both express a very strong feeling of happiness. However, 'Begeisterung' is much more normal in everyday language: you are very happy about something or strongly interested in it. 'Ekstase' is much stronger and describes an almost intoxicating state in which you may be very beside yourself. Learners may confuse the words because both sound positive and intense. For normal enjoyment of music, sports, or a topic, 'Begeisterung' is usually correct. 'Ekstase' only fits when the feeling is extreme.
