The word is made up of 'Englisch' (English) and the ending '-sprachig' (-speaking / -language). This ending can be combined with many languages to form similar adjectives, e.g. 'deutschsprachig' (German-speaking / German-language) or 'französischsprachig' (French-speaking / French-language).

Both words can refer to a medium and to the English language. Englischsprachig clearly identifies the language being used, while englisch can additionally refer to England, its people, or its culture. Use englischsprachig when the language is important, and englisch when the origin may also be meant.
