Usage tips

Compare with

antonym

entgehen vs nutzen

to use / benefit

'nutzen' and 'sich etwas entgehen lassen' are opposites here. When you use or take advantage of an opportunity, you actively take it and make something of it. When you 'sich eine Gelegenheit entgehen lassen' (miss out on an opportunity), you miss it or do not take part in it, even though it would be good or interesting. The difference is especially clear with offers, chances, or nice experiences: 'nutzen' means to take part or act, while 'sich entgehen lassen' means to pass up or miss out on something.

Visual example for nutzen
entgehen

Morgen lassen wir uns das Konzert im Park nicht entgehen.

Tomorrow we won't miss the concert in the park.

nutzen

Nach dem Gespräch nutzt Anna das Angebot und meldet sich für den Kurs an.

After the conversation, Anna takes advantage of the offer and signs up for the course.
