Usage tips
Word structure
The verb is made up of the prefix 'ent-' and the verb 'tarnen' (to disguise, to hide, to make invisible). 'Enttarnen' (to unmask) therefore literally means to remove the disguise from someone or something.
EXAMPLE
Der Detektiv konnte die geheime Identität des Spions enttarnen.
The detective was able to unmask the spy's secret identity.
Inseparable verb
The prefix 'ent-' is inseparable. It remains firmly attached to the verb in all sentence forms and tenses and is not placed at the end of the sentence.
EXAMPLE
Die Ermittler enttarnten das kriminelle Netzwerk nach monatelanger Arbeit.
The investigators unmasked the criminal network after months of work.
Use with 'als'
'Enttarnen' (to unmask) is very often used with the preposition 'als' (as) to describe what the person or thing really is. The structure is: jemanden oder etwas als etwas enttarnen (to unmask someone or something as something).
EXAMPLE
Sie hat ihren angeblich besten Freund als Verräter enttarnt.
She unmasked her supposedly best friend as a traitor.

enttarnen vs verbergen
to hide / conceal
'verbergen' and 'enttarnen' form opposites when someone does not want to show their true identity, intention, or role. 'verbergen' means that someone keeps something secret or hides themselves. 'enttarnen' means that exactly this hidden thing is revealed. The word fits especially when someone has disguised themselves, pretended, or deliberately presented themselves differently. If someone conceals their intention, they try to keep it secret. If someone unmasks them, the true intention becomes visible.
enttarnen
Nach dem Gespräch enttarnt mein Bruder den Betrüger.
After the conversation, my brother unmasks the fraudster.
verbergen
Im Gespräch verbirgt sie ihre wahren Pläne.
During the conversation, she conceals her true plans.
