'Erhaben' is the past participle of the verb 'erheben' (to raise, to lift up). This origin explains both meanings: Something can be majestically 'elevated' (meaning 1), or a person can rise mentally 'above' something (meaning 2).
Der Blick vom Gipfel des Berges war einfach erhaben.
The view from the mountain peak was simply sublime.
You can recognize the meaning from context: If the word describes a thing, landscape, or moment, it means 'majestic'. If it describes a person's attitude and appears with 'über' (above, over), it means 'unaffected by something negative'.
Die Architektur des alten Doms ist erhaben.
The architecture of the old cathedral is sublime.
In the meaning 'majestic', 'erhaben' (sublime) is often combined with words such as 'Anblick' (sight), 'Moment' (moment), 'Gefühl' (feeling), 'Natur' (nature), or 'Musik' (music).
Das Orchester spielte eine erhabene Melodie.
The orchestra played a sublime melody.
The second meaning is used almost exclusively in the fixed expression 'über etwas (Akkusativ) erhaben sein' (to be above something). It expresses moral or intellectual distance.
Er fühlte sich über die alltäglichen Sorgen seiner Kollegen erhaben.
He felt above the everyday worries of his colleagues.

'überlegen' and 'erhaben' can easily be confused because both can have to do with calmness or distance in some contexts. In the meanings intended here, however, the difference is clear: 'überlegen' is a verb and describes thinking something over, planning, or changing a decision. 'erhaben' is an adjective. It describes something very dignified and impressive, or an attitude in which you do not let criticism or small problems affect you. Use 'überlegen' for decisions and plans. For a majestic effect or inner distance, 'erhaben' fits.
Nach dem Gespräch bleibt Sofia ruhig und wirkt über jede Beleidigung erhaben.
After the conversation, Sofia remains calm and seems above every insult.
