'der Gewinn' and 'der Erlös' both often appear in business contexts. 'Erlös' is the money that comes in from a sale. The costs have not yet been deducted. 'Gewinn', by contrast, is what remains after all costs. That is why high proceeds can still lead to a small profit if the expenses were high. The words are easily confused because both have to do with money after a sale. Memory tip: Erlös is income from the sale; Gewinn is proceeds minus costs.
