'Die Erörterung' (discussion/argumentative essay) is the nominalization of the verb 'erörtern' (to discuss/examine). The ending '-ung' turns the verb into a feminine noun that describes the process or result of the action.

discussion
A Diskussion and an Erörterung both deal with a topic using different opinions and arguments. Diskussion usually refers to an exchange in a conversation, whereas Erörterung can also mean a detailed, objective examination and, in particular, a school essay. „Erörterung“ is therefore more suitable for an essay, while „Diskussion“ is more suitable for a discussion group.
