A technical installation that transports people or loads in a cabin vertically or diagonally between different levels of a building. A synonym is 'Aufzug' (elevator/lift).

The word 'Fahrstuhl' (elevator) is a compound of the verb 'fahren' (to travel/ride) and the noun 'der Stuhl' (chair). The idea behind it is therefore a 'moving chair' that transports people.

The old elevator moves upward only very slowly.
Common verbs used with 'Fahrstuhl' (elevator) are 'den Fahrstuhl nehmen' (to take the elevator), 'mit dem Fahrstuhl fahren' (to ride the elevator), or 'in den Fahrstuhl steigen' (to get into the elevator). If something goes wrong, 'bleibt der Fahrstuhl stecken' (the elevator gets stuck).

Both words are understood in everyday life and can usually be used without a difference in meaning. 'Aufzug' sounds a bit more general and often appears on signs or in building rules. 'Fahrstuhl' sounds very everyday and is especially natural in conversation. The only important point is: 'Aufzug' also has other meanings, while 'Fahrstuhl' almost always means the technical system in a building.
