A technical installation that transports people or loads in a cabin vertically or diagonally between different levels of a building. A synonym is 'Aufzug' (elevator/lift).

The word 'Fahrstuhl' (elevator) is a compound of the verb 'fahren' (to travel/ride) and the noun 'der Stuhl' (chair). The idea behind it is therefore a 'moving chair' that transports people.
Der alte Fahrstuhl bewegt sich nur sehr langsam nach oben.
The old elevator moves upward only very slowly.
Common verbs used with 'Fahrstuhl' (elevator) are 'den Fahrstuhl nehmen' (to take the elevator), 'mit dem Fahrstuhl fahren' (to ride the elevator), or 'in den Fahrstuhl steigen' (to get into the elevator). If something goes wrong, 'bleibt der Fahrstuhl stecken' (the elevator gets stuck).

Aufzug and Fahrstuhl refer to the same installation used to transport people between floors. Aufzug is the standard term used across the German-speaking region, while Fahrstuhl is more regionally marked and more common in everyday speech. In neutral or formal texts, Aufzug is usually the more appropriate choice.
