The verbs 'beobachten' (to observe), 'schauen' (to look) and 'sehen' (to see) are especially often used with 'Fernrohr' (telescope). People commonly use one to observe stars, ships or animals.

When describing looking through the device, the preposition 'durch' (through) is often used with the accusative: 'durch das Fernrohr schauen' (to look through the telescope) or 'durch das Fernrohr sehen' (to see through the telescope).
