A type of landscape characterized by small differences in elevation and the absence of mountains or larger hills. It is a flat or only slightly rolling region.

'die Ebene' and 'das Flachland' can both mean a flat landscape without mountains. 'Ebene' is somewhat more general and can describe a large flat area. 'Flachland' sounds more like a whole region or landscape, especially in contrast to mountains or hilly country. When talking about nature or geography, both often fit well. However, 'Ebene' also has other meanings, for example a level or a floor; 'Flachland' does not.
Im Flachland kann man mit dem Fahrrad viele Kilometer fahren, ohne starke Steigungen zu haben.
