Usage tips
Compound words
'Flugreise' (air travel) is made up of 'Flug' (flight) and 'Reise' (journey). The base word 'Reise' (journey) refers to the entire trip; 'Flug' (flight) indicates that it takes place by plane.
EXAMPLE
Für die Flugreise nach Madrid haben wir nur Handgepäck dabei.
We are taking only carry-on luggage for our flight to Madrid.
Typical collocations
Verbs such as 'buchen' (to book), 'planen' (to plan), 'antreten' (to begin) and 'machen' (to take) are especially common with 'Flugreise' (air travel). The combination 'eine Flugreise nach' (a flight to) a place is also very common.
EXAMPLE
Wir haben die Flugreise nach Rom schon vor drei Monaten gebucht.
We booked our flight to Rome three months ago.
Naming a destination
For cities and most countries, the destination of a 'Flugreise' (flight) is named with 'nach' (to), for example 'eine Flugreise nach Madrid' (a flight to Madrid) or 'nach Japan' (to Japan). For countries with an article, such as 'die Schweiz' (Switzerland) or 'die USA' (the United States), 'in' is used with the accusative: 'eine Flugreise in die Schweiz' (a flight to Switzerland).
EXAMPLE
Ihre Flugreise nach Japan beginnt am frühen Morgen.
Her flight to Japan begins early in the morning.
Unsere Flugreise in die Schweiz dauert nur etwa eine Stunde.
Our flight to Switzerland takes only about an hour.
