Compound word
The word is clearly composed of 'Fuß' (foot) and 'Boden' (ground/floor). The 's' in between is a linking sound that connects the two parts. Literally, it is the floor you stand on with your feet.
EXAMPLE
Pass auf, der Fußboden ist frisch gewischt und noch nass.
Be careful, the floor has just been mopped and is still wet.
Dative or accusative?
The preposition 'auf' is used with the dative to describe a location (Where?). It is used with the accusative to indicate a direction (Where to?).
