Compound word
The word is clearly composed of 'Fuß' (foot) and 'Boden' (ground/floor). The 's' in between is a linking sound that connects the two parts. Literally, it is the floor you stand on with your feet.
EXAMPLE
Pass auf, der Fußboden ist frisch gewischt und noch nass.
Be careful, the floor has just been mopped and is still wet.
Dative or accusative?
The preposition 'auf' is used with the dative to describe a location (Where?). It is used with the accusative to indicate a direction (Where to?).
EXAMPLE
Die Spielsachen liegen auf dem Fußboden.
The toys are lying on the floor.
Typical verbs
Common verbs in connection with 'Fußboden' (floor) are 'den Fußboden wischen' (to mop the floor), 'saugen' (to vacuum), or 'fegen' (to sweep). When a new floor is installed, you say 'einen Fußboden verlegen' (to lay/install a floor).

'der Boden' and 'der Fußboden' can both mean the surface you walk on. However, 'Fußboden' is used only in a room or building. 'Boden' is more general: indoors it can be the floor, but outdoors it can also be the ground. Learners may confuse the words because in an apartment you can often say both. If you want to clearly say that you mean the walkable surface in a room, 'Fußboden' is more precise.
