'die Erinnerung' and 'das Gedenken' both have to do with the past. 'Erinnerung' is very general and can be private, for example of a vacation, a person, or an experience. 'Gedenken' is used for a conscious, often solemn remembrance of deceased people or important historical events. The words can be confused because both preserve something that has passed. 'Erinnerung' fits in everyday contexts; 'Gedenken' is more appropriate for official or serious occasions.
