Usage tips
Word structure
'Geführt' (guided/managed) is the past participle of the verb 'führen' (to lead/guide). It always describes something that is led, guided, or directed by someone or something.
EXAMPLE
Das Protokoll der Sitzung wird von der Sekretärin geführt.
The minutes of the meeting are kept by the secretary.
Sentence structure with "von"
Often, the person or institution that has the leadership is added with the preposition 'von' (by). This is a typical passive construction.
EXAMPLE
Die von einem Experten geführte Diskussion war sehr informativ.
The discussion guided by an expert was very informative.
Typical collocations
In the meaning of 'geleitet' (guided/led), 'geführt' (guided) is very often used for tourist activities. Typical combinations are 'eine geführte Tour' (a guided tour), 'eine geführte Wanderung' (a guided hike), or 'ein geführter Stadtrundgang' (a guided city walk).
EXAMPLE
Bei einer geführten Wanderung erfährt man viel über die lokale Flora und Fauna.
On a guided hike, you learn a lot about the local flora and fauna.
Combination with adverbs
To describe the quality of the management, 'geführt' (managed) is often combined with an adverb or another noun. Examples are 'gut/schlecht geführt' (well/poorly managed), 'professionell geführt' (professionally managed), or 'familiengeführt' (family-run).
EXAMPLE
Das familiengeführte Restaurant ist für seine traditionelle Küche bekannt.
The family-run restaurant is known for its traditional cuisine.

geführt vs betrieben
powered / operated
'geführt' and 'betrieben' can both mean that a person or organization is responsible for something. 'geführt' puts more emphasis on management, organization, or administration, for example with a business or household. 'betrieben' emphasizes more that something is actively maintained and kept running, for example a café, a website, or a facility. The words can be confused because both can fit with companies and institutions. As a practical rule: if you mean decisions and organization, you often say 'geführt'. If you mean that a business or service is running, you are more likely to say 'betrieben'.

Das kleine Hotel wird seit Jahren von einer Familie geführt.
