'verschieden' and 'gestorben' can both express that someone is no longer alive. The important difference is in style. 'gestorben' is the normal word and fits most conversations. 'verschieden' is elevated and formal in this meaning; you are more likely to hear it in official or very respectful texts. Learners may confuse the words because 'verschieden' much more often means 'different' or 'various'. If you want to be clear and natural in everyday language, 'gestorben' is usually more natural.
