In a 'Wohngebiet' (residential area), there are mainly houses and apartments for people. The words can be confused because both have to do with urban planning and 'Gebiet' (area). A simple question helps: if people mainly work and produce things there, it is a 'Gewerbegebiet'; if people mainly live there, it is a 'Wohngebiet'.
