Participle as adjective
'Gewohnt' (usual/used to) is the past participle of the reflexive verb 'sich gewöhnen' (to get used to). This origin explains the meaning of familiarity and habit.
EXAMPLE
Nach drei Wochen war der Lärm für ihn zur gewohnten Geräuschkulisse geworden.
After three weeks, the noise had become the usual background noise for him.
Fixed construction
To express that you are used to something, you use the fixed structure 'etwas (Akkusativ) gewohnt sein' (to be used to something). The object is always in the accusative and used without a preposition.
EXAMPLE
Ich bin die Kälte in diesem Büro gewohnt.
I am used to the cold in this office.
Construction with infinitive
If you want to say that you are used to doing something, you use the structure 'es gewohnt sein, … zu + Infinitiv' (to be used to ...-ing). The word 'es' is a fixed placeholder here.
EXAMPLE

He is used to working long hours.
As a descriptive adjective
In the meaning of 'üblich' (usual) or 'vertraut' (familiar), 'gewohnt' (usual) stands before a noun like a normal adjective and is declined. It describes that this noun is the normal or expected one.

We met at the usual time in the usual place.

You are 'gewohnt' to a long commute when it no longer bothers you. 'bekannt' emphasizes knowing or recognizing something; 'gewohnt' emphasizes habit or being used to something.
