You can recognize the meaning from the context: if it refers to a person, it is about traces of suffering. If it refers to a document, it is about signing. If it refers to a picture, it is about art.

In the meaning 'marked by suffering', the word is almost always used with the preposition 'von' (by/from). The cause of the suffering then follows in the dative.
